Lower Back Pain Rehab: Core Exercises and Movement🛠️⚙️

Struggling with lower back pain? Learn how physical therapy uses hip mobility, anti-rotation core presses, and box squats to protect and strengthen your spine. Lower Back Pain Rehab: Core Exercises and Movement Lower back pain can make everyday movements like bending, sitting, or standing up feel difficult. It’s natural to wonder whether to rest, keep moving, or start exercising. The right approach depends on your symptoms, health history, and what you need to get back to doing. Back pain can have different causes, and no single exercise sequence suits everyone. Rebuilding a resilient lower back takes more than quick fixes. For many people with acute low-back pain, staying active, as symptoms allow, may be more helpful than bed rest, but that doesn’t mean forcing painful movements. By teaching your glutes and core to absorb force, you may be able to direct pressure off the lumbar spine and restore confidence in your movement. Read how fear of movement can affect back and hip pain ...

Lupus Physical Therapy: Safe Exercise for Pain Relief🏥

Managing Lupus requires more than fear or unproven quick fixes. Discover why true autoimmune resilience balances modern medical treatment with targeted movement and anti-inflammatory nutrition. Facing a chronic diagnosis like Lupus Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) often triggers a search for answers—and it is easy to get caught in the mindset trap of relying strictly on "natural alternatives" or avoiding structured activity out of fear. But fear and a lack of discipline only limit your progress. Rebuilding your health requires a total mindset reset: shifting from feeling managed by an illness to taking active control of your recovery. Living with lupus can make movement feel unpredictable. Some days, exercise helps you feel better. Other days, fatigue, stiffness, or pain can make even light activity feel like too much.  That is why the best approach is usually not all-or-nothing thinking. It is a balanced plan that combines medical care, physical therapy, and supportive...

A Year with Lupus: How I Rebuilt My Training, Strength, and Confidence💜

One year ago, I was diagnosed with lupus.  As a physical therapist, I found it changed everything—not just how I trained, but how I understood my body, my limits, and my strength. One year ago, I was diagnosed with lupus.  The beginning of the rest of my new life. That sentence still carries weight. As a physical therapist, I’ve spent my career helping people move through pain, rebuild strength, and trust their bodies again.  But when lupus became my reality, I had to live every lesson I had ever given to someone else. And I’ll be honest: it was not easy. My body changed.  My energy changed.  My training changed.  My identity changed. Learning to train differently 💪 Before lupus, I thought progress meant doing more. More weight.  More intensity.  More discipline.  More pushing. But lupus forced me to learn a different kind of strength. Now, I focus on: ✅listening to my body instead of fighting it  ✅respecting flare-ups instead of preten...

Heat Therapy Benefits: How Sauna Supports Heart Health and Muscle Recovery♨️💪

Sweating your way to better recovery? Sauna therapy may do more than help you relax — it may support circulation, heart health, brain health, muscle recovery, and nervous system recovery when used safely.  As a physical therapist, I like sauna therapy because it is simple, practical, and easy to pair with movement, hydration, and rest. Research summaries from Harvard Health and Stanford Lifestyle Medicine suggest sauna use may be a valuable lifestyle practice for overall wellness ( Harvard Health ; Stanford Lifestyle Medicine ). Sauna benefits for heart health❤️ One of the most studied sauna benefits for heart health is its effect on circulation.  A sauna session raises body temperature and heart rate, creating a temporary heat stress response.  Over time, that response may help the body adapt in ways that support cardiovascular health. Harvard Health reports that sauna use has been linked with longer life and fewer fatal heart problems in observational research ( Harv...

Can Sauna Stretching Improve Flexibility and Speed Up Recovery?🔥

Want to stretch deeper and ease muscle soreness?  A sauna may help. 🌡️ For athletes, active adults, and people dealing with stiffness, passive heat can make mobility work feel more comfortable.  Warmth may help tissues feel less resistant, making stretching feel easier. That said, sauna stretching is not a cure-all , and it is not appropriate for everyone .  If you have medical concerns, talk with a qualified clinician before trying heat-based recovery. ⚠️ Why can heat make stretching feel easier🔥 When your body warms up, muscles and soft tissues often feel less stiff.  This can make it easier to move through a range of motion with less resistance. Heat may also help by: ✅Increasing local blood flow ✅Helping muscles relax ✅Making gentle stretching feel less intense ✅Supporting a calmer recovery state after training Think of cold tissue like a stiff rubber band.  Warm tissue is often easier to work with. 🧵 What the research says📖 Research on passive heat ther...

When the Sparks Came Before the Flame: Lupus Awareness Month 💜ִֶָྀི. ..𓂃 ࣪ ִֶָ🦋་༘࿐

Last updated 7/11/2026 I had lupus symptoms for years before I understood what my body was trying to tell me. Early Lupus Warning Signs: What My Body Was Telling Me Before I was diagnosed with lupus, my body was already telling the story.  I just didn’t know how to read it yet. I am a physical therapist , and I spent years learning to help others understand pain, movement, and healing.  But when it came to my own body, the signs were easy to minimize.  I was tired in a way that sleep did not fix.  My joints ached.  I had swelling that came and went.  I dealt with skin changes and fevers that didn’t make sense.   I knew something was wrong, but like so many people with lupus, I was initially misdiagnosed for years. That part matters. Lupus is not always loud at the beginning.  Sometimes it whispers.    Sometimes it disguises itself as stress, overwork, inflammation, or something “minor” that can wait.   In my case, those whispe...

When Hips Feel Like Rusted Hinges: Mobility During Cancer Recovery🎗️🩷💗

Updated on 7/15/2026 Hip Mobility During and After Cancer Treatment Why Hip Mobility Matters During Cancer Recovery When you’re navigating cancer treatment, hip mobility may be the last thing on your mind.  But after long hours in infusion chairs, pelvic radiation, or medication side effects, hips can start to feel stiff , guarded, and hard to trust. 💛 That stiffness isn’t “just tightness.” It can affect  walking, balance, sleep, and independence .  The encouraging part?   Movement is still reclaimable.  💃🏻🕺🏽 The Physical Therapist Perspective   🏥 How Treatment Can Affect the Hips From a physical therapist’s perspective, this matters because treatment can change how your body moves.  Radiation may contribute to tissue changes such as fibrosis; chemotherapy can increase inflammation or bone fragility;  and fatigue often leads to more sitting and less natural movement.  Over time, the muscles around the hips and pelvis can shorten...

Lupus Awareness Month: Living, Treating, and Thriving With Lupus SLE 💜🦋

May is Lupus Awareness Month 💜. ..𓂃 ࣪ ִֶָ🦋་༘࿐ What May Means for Me as a Jamaican Physical Therapist Living with Lupus As a Jamaican physical therapist living with Lupus SLE , this month means more than a color or a hashtag to me.  It’s personal.  It’s lived.  And it’s a reminder that behind every diagnosis is a person trying to keep moving through pain, fatigue, uncertainty, and invisible battles that most people never see. Lupus does not look the same for everyone.  Some days it’s joint pain.  Some days, it’s exhaustion that feels heavier than your body.  Some days it’s the emotional weight of having to explain why you don’t always feel like yourself.  And for so many of us, it becomes a daily lesson in resilience 💪🏽 Photo: When Lupus wants to break my wings , I still fly Why Lupus Awareness Month Matters Lupus Is Not the Same for Everyone What we do know is this: 90% of people with lupus are women , and Black, Latinx, Indigenous, Asian, and Pac...
