Why Making Lupus Visible Matters
The theme for World Lupus Day 2026 is "Make Lupus Visible". Too often, lupus goes unnoticed, with its symptoms misunderstood and its impact ignored. This May 10, we invite everyone to help make lupus visible so that no one has to face this disease alone.
As someone living with lupus, I’ve shared more of my experience in my lupus journey and how it shapes the way I approach both movement and patient education.
Lupus Symptoms Are Not Always Obvious
Lupus can affect many parts of the body, and symptoms may come and go. Fatigue, joint pain, swelling, skin rashes, fevers, and brain fog are just some of the signs that may appear differently from person to person.
That’s part of why I wrote When the Sparks Came Before the Flame: Lupus Awareness Month — because lupus often shows up quietly before it becomes easier to name.
Why Early Recognition Matters
Adding a lupus symptoms checklist can help readers recognize patterns and seek medical guidance sooner. While a checklist cannot replace a diagnosis, it can be a helpful first step in understanding when symptoms may need further evaluation

Research and clinical guidance continue to show that lupus is complex, variable, and often difficult to identify early. That is why awareness matters: the sooner symptoms are recognized, the sooner people can connect with the right care and support.
How Lupus Affects Daily Life
Lupus is more than a diagnosis — it can affect energy, mobility, work, family life, and emotional well-being. Many people live with symptoms that are invisible to others, which can make it harder to be taken seriously or get answers quickly. Making lupus visible means listening, learning, and advocating for earlier support.
